The primary function of our roof is to protect you from the elements. No matter which part of the country you live in, it is only natural for you to expect your roof to do a decent job in keeping us safe and comfortable. However, every once in a while, Mother Nature will throw a tantrum and send severe weather events our way. When this happens, how sure are you that your roof will be able to hold up to it?
Fire Resistance
Fire ratings are classified from Class A to C with Class A providing the highest level of fire resistance. Fortunately, most of the common roofing materials with the exception of untreated wood shakes meet Class A standards.
Wind Resistance
Even if you do not live in an area where hurricanes or tornadoes are common, it is still important to install a roof that has a high resistance to strong winds. The choice of roofing materials plays a huge role in this, but equally important is hiring a skilled roofing company. Good design and installation techniques will go a long way towards making your roof more resistant to wind.
Hail Resistance
It does not take a hailstone the size of your fist to damage your roof. If you live in states where hailstorms are common, your best bet is to go with a roof that has Class IV Impact Resistance. They may be a bit more expensive, but they are definitely worth the extra cost.
Freezing Resistance
If you live in an area where the temperatures drop below freezing, it is critical to install a roofing material that is specifically designed for use in cold climates. Roofing experts will also make special considerations for high snow loads to ensure that your roof can take the added weight of accumulated snow on your roof.
